🥾 The backpacking trip

Tier: van → trailhead → backpack (drive recon + car-camping ends at the

trailhead; the van stays while you hike in).

Lake Aloha — the island-studded granite basin

The lake: Aloha is the showpiece of Desolation Wilderness — a vast, shallow

sheet at ~8,100 ft strewn with *hundreds* of rocky granite islets, backed by the

sawtooth of Pyramid Peak and the Crystal Range. It's a dammed lake, so the level

matters: early–mid summer (your July 3) is prime — it's brimming and surreal;

by September it's drawn down to mudflats and rock.

Lakes to camp at: Aloha's shoreline is iconic but exposed (open granite,

little shade). For shelter, the approach lakes are better — Lake of the Woods

and Lake Lucille (forested), Heather and Susie on the PCT side.

Swim / fish: swimmable midsummer (the shallow island flats warm up); brook

trout throughout.

Best for: the most dramatic basin of the Tahoe options — but the most exposed

camping and the most contested permit (Desolation zone 33 / Aloha).

Difficulty for the rig

Moderate 19 Easy 13

vs your experience: hardest here is Avoid — harder than anything you've logged (your max is Caution) — be cautious

USFS operational maintenance level. OML 2 = high-clearance = the van's sweet spot; OML 1 = scout first.

MVUM is the legal authority for motorized use. Dispersed camping is generally allowed on NF land near open roads (commonly within ~150-300ft) unless the forest restricts it to designated corridors — verify on that forest's MVUM.

Before you go

Free satellite imagery cannot resolve ruts, washouts, or rock ledges. Recent imagery is too coarse for road detail; high-res imagery is not current. Treat the visual analysis as terrain/route guidance, not a current trail report. Scout rough access in person.
