🥾 The backpacking trip

Tier: van → trailhead → backpack (drive recon + car-camping ends at the

trailhead; the van stays while you hike in).

---

Little Lakes Valley — the most lakes for the least climbing

The lakes: this is the lake hike. From Mosquito Flat the valley runs nearly

flat up a glacial trough packed with lakes under Bear Creek Spire and the Mono

Divide: Mack, Marsh, Heart, Box, Long, Chickenfoot, and the Gem Lakes. Alpine

lakes within the first mile, and they keep coming — the best lakes-per-mile,

least-effort payoff anywhere in the range.

Lakes to camp at: Long Lake (~2 mi, broad and stunning) or the **Gem

Lakes (~4 mi, jewel tarns at the valley head). Mono Pass** is the steeper

alternate up to Ruby Lake.

Swim / fish: lots of sunny shoreline (warmer swims than the glacial lakes);

excellent fishing — golden & brook trout in nearly every lake.

Best for: the "key in on lakes" pick — minimal climbing, maximum alpine

lakes, ideal for a relaxed three-person trip. Inyo entry point Mono Pass = 494

(Little Lakes Valley overnight is reached via the Mono Pass / Rock Creek quota).

Difficulty for the rig

Easy 23 Moderate 2

vs your experience: hardest here is Avoid — harder than anything you've logged (your max is Caution) — be cautious

USFS operational maintenance level. OML 2 = high-clearance = the van's sweet spot; OML 1 = scout first.

MVUM is the legal authority for motorized use. Dispersed camping is generally allowed on NF land near open roads (commonly within ~150-300ft) unless the forest restricts it to designated corridors — verify on that forest's MVUM.

Before you go

Free satellite imagery cannot resolve ruts, washouts, or rock ledges. Recent imagery is too coarse for road detail; high-res imagery is not current. Treat the visual analysis as terrain/route guidance, not a current trail report. Scout rough access in person.
